As soon as MJ put a step off the court after his second retirement, everybody started to look for the "next Jordan". Kobe Bryant, Vince Carter, Tracy McGrady, Allen Iverson, Kevin Garnett and more recently Lebron James and Dwyane Wade are some of his "heirs".
Most of these players have already shown that although they are great they will never be at Jordan's level.
The hyper-advertised James looks better every season and his numbers are amazing but also has a long way to go to prove he has the attitude. And talking about attitude, Kobe Bryant will never have Jordan's numbers but he is on the same page when we talk about competitiveness and the desire to show he is the best. It is almost impossible for Bryant to match MJ's awards and career point averages but he is the only one on this list (and in NBA history) who has matched Jordan and Chamberlain in scoring streaks (40+ points, 50+ points, etc) and he even scored 81 points in one game. He also has 3 championships and many years ahead, but on the other side he still has to prove he's capable to lead a team to the title (read: without Shaquille O'Neal).
Note: current players stats include 2007-2008 NBA season (not the playoffs yet).
