The world is hyped as Michael comes back for a final run in the Air Jordan XVII. Designer Wilson Smith means business with the jazz-themed shoe as it comes with an interactive CD-ROM and a full metal briefcase. These kicks even have their own theme song inspired by Mike, "The Greatest" as performed by Team Jordan saxophonist Mike Phillips.

As MJ continues to improvise on the hardwood, the XVII has his back with a blow molded heel and forefoot Tuned Air, TPU heel stabilizer and a full-length composite shank plate. As a clever nod to MJ's recent retirement the sole's design is based on a golf course.

Deciding to lead Washington from the floor rather than the front office, Michael returns once again to basketball. He records 19 points, 6 assists, 5 boards and 4 steals in 37 minutes in their New York season opener.

Showing Washington how it's done, MJ sets team records for most points scored in the first quarter (24) vs. Charlotte on 12/29/2001, second quarter (19) vs. Chicago (1/4/2002) and points scored in a half (34 vs. Charlotte (12/29/2001. Still a deadly all around threat, he scores 45 points, 10 rebounds, 7 assists and 3 steals vs. New Jersey (12/31/2001). In a game that couldn't be more appropriate, he scores his historical 30,000th career point versus his former Chicago team (1/4/2002). Over the course of the season, MJ leads Washington with 22.9 ppg while averaging 5.7 boards, 5.2 assists and 1.4 steals.
